Wishing you a belated Happy Mother’s Day!

I'm hoping life has not been as hectic for you as it has been for me lately. But, if it has here are some items I ran across that can still give you some time out for you and your child to connect and they look fun to boot! I love these because they can help to teach...

your son or daughter that a child is a child and each equal to the next no matter where they started from, no matter what color their skin is that they are loved equally as well. Follow this link for some multicultural fun with your kids: http://www.eeboo.com/startpage.php?cat=55 .
And since Father’s Day is coming up soon even dads can be ahead of the game as these can be played by mom and dad alike.
And in this season of busyness this quote gave me some comfort today. Perhaps it will for you too.

It is not how much we do,
but how much love we put into the doing.
It is not how much we give,
but how much love we put in the giving.

Adult Adoptees

Are you an Adoptee who would like to share some of your thoughts in a book to adoptive dads? If so, here is an opportunity to get your words in a book.

From one or two sentences to however much you want to say…here is the question they are asking… "As an inter-country adoptee what advice would you provide to today's adoptive fathers?" The contributions of adult aged intercountry adoptees would be anonymous.
I think the original intent was to get your thoughts in by May 30th, so the book could be released on-line by Father’s Day, I'm betting if you wrote by the beginning of next week that there would still be a shot at getting your words included.
Please contact Nigel below at thecurryclub@y7mail.com if you are interested.

Awesome dad

My elder son (5 year old, biological) wishes to express his emotions through this letter to his dear Baba…a tribute to him on Father’s Day 2007!

Dear Sachin Baba:

Ever since I first opened my eyes, I saw you. You gazed at me as if I was such a wonderful thing, that it melted my heart. I remember, you looking at my mother, smiling in gratitude for giving you, me! Since then I have grown up to be your splitting image, always looking towards you, watching your every step, catching your every word. I know they are the most valuable words that I will ever get in my life.

I see you getting dressed for office every morning, and I feel a sadness overcome me. It will be another six hours till I will see you again. But I console myself and wait eagerly for the day to end, when you will come back, pick me up, snuggle me close and then spend every wakeful minute playing with me and answering my numerous questions. I ride on your back and you wince since you are tired, but you still smile and let me continue with my playful fantasies.

Last year, you brought me the most wonderful gift of all. A little baby sister! A very special one indeed, since she has two mothers and two fathers. And ever since she has come into our home, I have seen another new you. You gaze at my little sister in amazement as she grabs your finger, again looking at you in awe and admiration, as I do. You tell me that my little sister was first at a different home before she came into ours and I feel sad that she did not get the opportunity to see you as soon as she opened her tiny little eyes for the first time.

Baba, we both love you so much. You are fun, you are caring and on top of all that you let us be ourselves. You patiently answer all our questions and questioning expressions as well. I know, you miss us when you are away and yearn to come back home as fast as you can to see and play with your two little angels.

I have heard you say that Since GOD could not be everywhere, he created a MOTHER! But we feel that He put in a lot of thought when he created our FATHER too.

Awesome dad

My "Anna" is the most awesome Dad ever, because right from my childhood till this day, his complete and unconditional love has inspired me time and again.

I lost my mother when I was 6 and my brother was 13; he lost his wife and the mother to his kids, but he soldiered on, loving us for the both of them. He plaited my thick long braids, gently and tenderly lest it would hurt me; he bathed me, dressed my scraped knees and soothed my fevered brow.He married again so that we could grow up in a secure environment and know a mother’s love. He supported my “stepmother” through all the turbulence of a family adjusting to changes. I learnt that Love means – being fair, responsible and committed, being there for the good and the bad, in sickness and in health, for better or worse; and that the cruel stepmother was indeed the stuff of fairytales. He hoped I would become an engineer like him, but proudly shared with his friends his joy at his “CA daughter”. Abroad for 8 years, he wrote me long letters filled with equal parts of humor and wisdom, giving me the confidence to live alone in Mumbai and then later to embark on my life as a new bride in Chennai.

He may not have agreed with many of my choices, but he always supported me in them. What a gift, to be able to nudge the chick you have brought up, out of the nest, praying that it won’t fall to the ground and watch as it falters and then soars towards the skies.

And then, when I lay in hospital for 3 months, just 26yrs old and weighing 26 kilos, critically ill with the same condition that took away my mother, he quit his job abroad not even bothering to pack. He was there, through my 3 surgeries and the 2 years it took, supporting my husband and willing me to come back to the life that many had written off. “We will fight this, Jira” he would say, shaking his fist at whoever might dare disagree.

I did fight, because every time I looked into his eyes, I saw boundless love; every time I touched his callused hands I felt the intensity of his affection and his anger at cruel Fate. How could I not fight, when I had the world’s best Cheerleader by my side?!

Here I am today, a parent myself; he supported us as we adopted our little baby girl and became the most Awesome Granddad for his “sweet angel”. History repeats itself. I love you Anna.

Awesome dad

I am the mother of two sons. They were born in Kolkata 18 and 14 years ago. My elder son graduated from high school in May. On the night of his graduation commencement, he was allowed to select a restaurant to celebrate. He chose Sitar, a local Indian restaurant--a favourite of both sons. He invited the relatives that had attended the commencement ceremonies.

While I was growing up, my father was not a particularly adventurous eater. He preferred the dishes he had grown up with--the vegetables he grew, prepared the way his mother had prepared them. Because of this and the late hour, I really did not expect him to accept the invitation, but he did!

He didn't stop there, though. He selected from the menu, with no input from anyone else, my younger son's all-time-favorite sag dish. Not only that, but he loved it!

His presence on this special day for my elder son was a blessing, as was his sharing the tastes of my younger son. Over the years, I have heard that there are parents who do not support their children when they adopt. Both my parents AND my husband's parents were behind us, supporting us, and loving our children all the way.

Awesome dad

I want to take this opportunity to honor my husband, Carl Futia, as an amazing dad.

For many years, I was the one in the family who went out to work, while he worked at home and had responsibility for the home and family. We have three children who were adopted from Kolkata as tiny, high-risk infants. All three of them have learning disabilities, and it was Carl who year after year patiently worked with them on their homework, attended meetings with our school district, and talked with their teachers to iron out issues. He also took them to the doctor, transported them to birthday parties, and did all the things that were needed to keep them safe, well and happy. When they were small, they came to him to kiss their "boo-boos" and comfort them when they had bad dreams. Now they are 20, 17 and 12, and the older two are well on their way to a successful adult life. Our youngest son has always been a big challenge, as he suffers from acute early-onset bipolar disorder as well as mental retardation. It takes a huge amount of patience and understanding to get through each day with a bipolar child. Carl has developed a special knack for defusing our son's oppositional behavior and tantrums, while also providing boundaries and dispensing hugs whenever our son needed them. Being the primary caregiver to our son has taken an incredible amount of fortitude, and Carl has been the one to show the rest of us how to cope with the daily ups and downs. I am thankful beyond words that our children were given the gift of a special dad to match their special needs. Happy Father's Day, Carl!
