Do you know this?

There are approximately 18000 parents registered with CARA, while the number of children in the Government's adoption pool is less 1800.

Analogy of adoption to marriage (Adoption discussion)

My family had recently attended an adoptive families get-together hosted by Sudatta at Bangalore. It was a well organized program. We had one speaker who compared adoption to a marriage. Marriage is a choice of two individuals to come together through a socio-legal framework to become a family. According to her, adoption also is same because it is by choice to bring a child through a socio-legal framework to become a family.

I really liked the analogy but I had my own questions. If we try to compare two things (marriage and adoption here), then we must compare them in every aspect to see if they truly match. For example, in a marriage, two adults consent to come together through a socio-legal framework to become a family but where is such consent of two parties in adoption? Does the child consent to a family to come to them?

In a marriage, there’s also something called “Divorce”. Comparatively how does that work in adoption? Am I making sense or am I reading too much unnecessarily? What do you think? Write your thoughts in the comments section.

I would agree to the analogy of adoption to marriage from a different perspective.
Often when I am discussing adoption as an option, one thing that always comes up is compatibility of the adopted child with adoptive parents vs, compatibility of biological children with their birth parents. I always reply saying - Just as in a marriage where individual from diverse backgrounds spent the rest of their lives together, in adoption also, people from different biological background can spent the rest of their lives together..

Ruby, it is a well intended analogy aiming to liken the adoption to the sanctity of marriage in India.
