Sense of humor as a life skill in adolescent children.

Every adolescent child goes through a difficult stage in their life due to peer pressure with some being positive influences and others being negative. Parents of an adolescent child go through tremendous amount of stress for fear of their child making wrong choices in life.

I heard a brilliant speech of a Psychiatrist of National Institute of Mental Health and Neurological Sciences (NIMHANS) of Bangalore and an adoptive mother at a recently held Sudatta workshop.

She said that one of the strategies that parents can teach their child to cope with life’s stress is by nurturing the sense of humor in him/ her. But then how do you nurture sense of humor in a child. Well…it is only by laughing at yourself. When you make fun of yourself to allow your child to see the ease in handling certain situations, be assured that your child will take a cue to diffuse hard situation that come on their way with his/ her peers.
