Do you know that children have rights?

When we talk about rights, no one thinks of children as someone who deserve to have rights. Agreed that a child may not be able to think rationally to make an informed decision but that beside the point every child in this world have right. Do you know what they are? In the mid eighties, United Nations formulated a document to list the rights of the children, which was one of the rapidly ratified conventions ever by the whole world except United States of America and Somalia.

This convention is called “United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child” or UNCRC. A signatory (India is a signatory) to UNCRC is required to pass legislations in one’s own country to be in compliance with the UNCRC. India’s major initiatives have been are to pass Juvenile & Justice Act in 2000 and to set up a National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPC) in 2006.
