Pre-adoption counselling

(Adoption tip # 38)

It was sometime in the year 2000 my wife and I chose to attend the pre-adoption counselling that was mandated by our adoption agency. We attended in Houston, TX at a Methodist church premises. It was a full day session on different topics. During lunch time we had several different adoptive families of the region bring lunch and their adoption stories (albums, scrap books, journals and children etc) for us to see.

One of the session of the day was a presentation by an adoptee. That was a very powerful presentation. We were able to interact and ask her questions. We both of us had lot of preconceived ideas on adoption (about the selection of a baby, and disclosure of history etc) and no doubt this counselling session was of immense use.

Adoption tip: Volunteer to attend a pre-adoption counselling (preferably with your spouse) even if your adoption agency doesn't mandate it. You'll be amazed how much you'll learn from it.
