Adoption Q and A # 3

How do I start discussing about adoption with my child?

There’s no right or wrong answer to this question as to whether disclosing about the adoption is appropriate or not. There are no tailor made approaches but only guidelines. Anything/ Everything you do, must do it in the best interest of your child.

If you’re starting out at the age of two, try the following storyline that might give you an idea: “Once upon a time, there was a mommy and a daddy and they wanted a baby but they couldn’t make one. So they went to an orphanage at (use the name of the town) and told them that they wanted a beautiful child with black hair, brown eyes and dark skin. They brought a child with pink hair and they told them no, no, no, no, then they brought a child with green hair and we said no, no, no, no (Try all kinds of combinations). Then they brought this beautiful child with dark hair, brown eyes and dark skin and we said yes, yes, yes and they brought you home and that’s YOU. Wait for the child to ask you questions and answer her questions to the best of your abilities because you want her to be as interactive as you possibly can.
